Things To Do In Ankeny, Iowa

The Ankeny Art Center is committed to providing community art experiences that inspire and educate. The Center supports community artists and provides a diverse all-ages art experience for visitors and residents. The gallery rotates its displays of local Iowa artists every eight weeks, giving every artist in the community a chance to showcase their work. Best of all, visiting the Center is free to the public! Stimulating and challenging art classes for all ages are held year-round, as well as summer camps and workshops. Classes, camps, and workshops are all taught by certified art teachers who are also working artists or instructors.

Every winter, the Ankeny Art Center hosts the annual Santa’s North Pole Village Craft Show, a one day event that features 300 vendors and artists. The event is an Ankeny tradition that has been held for more than three decades. Visitors looking for last minute holiday gifts will be pleased by the wide selection of high-quality handcrafted items, including jewelry, clothing, and holiday decorations. Non-profit organizations offer food and drinks for sale, giving residents a fun and easy way to support their local community. As the Ankeny Art Center’s biggest fundraiser of the year, Center’s employees and volunteers go out to ensure that this annual craft show is spectacular!

For those new to the area that enjoy year-round outdoor activities, Margo Frankel Woods State Park is a lesser-known park that spans 136 acres, making it a perfect place to enjoy a day of quiet natural serenity. The park was originally named Saylor Woods after John Saylor, an early settler on the park’s land, but the area was once an ancient Algonkian and Sioux hunting ground. The name was changed from Saylor Woods to Margo Frankel Woods to honor Margo Frankel, an environmentalist who served on the State Park Board and Conservation Commission. The park offers shaded trails and shelters, as well as playgrounds and areas to rest and relax with the family. There’s even a creek to splash in if you get too hot exploring.
