Things To Do In The South Grand Area Of Des Moines

With over 800 miles of recreational trails, Des Moines is the perfect place for hikers, bicyclists, and residents of all ages to enjoy one of the area’s many clear and sunny days. Residents also use the trails for their daily commute, making South Grand a wonderful example of environmentally-friendly travel. For those looking for a more challenging hike, the Des Moines River Water Trail is an 100-mile trail that starts in Fort Dodge and ends at Saylorville Lake. After the Saylorville Dam, the trail starts again, allowing residents to make their way at their own pace through downtown Des Moines.

Des Moines has a thriving art scene, with galleries dotted throughout South Grand and the surrounding area. The Moberg Gallery is located on Grand Avenue in Des Moines, and is known for its boundary-pushing art work, as well as its professional art consultation and services. The gallery hosts a wide selection of work from stellar artists in all forms of media, including Heather Brammeier, Johanne Brouillette, Tibi Chelcea, Frank Hansen, Alyson Khan, Bart Vargas, Aaron Wilson and Tim Dooley, and more. Whether you’re interested in modern day sculpture, large scale collaborative work, or oil prints based on the Classics, the Moberg hosts something for everyone.

Talk to any Iowan about Des Moines’ signature dish, Steak de Burgo, and you’ll hear almost as much debate as you would if you asked which state has the best BBQ. Steak de Burgo is a filet served with a sauce that (and here’s where the debate begins!) is either butter based or cream based. Though both sauces could be considered delicious, it’s up to individual chefs and self-proclaimed foodies to debate which makes a “real” Steak de Burgo. When it comes to finding the best Steak De Burgo in the area, visitors have a large selection to choose from. Check out Catch Des Moines’s list of voter’s favorite restaurants that serve the city’s signature dish and decide which you prefer.
