About Urbandale, Iowa

Located in Polk and Dallas counties, Urbandale, Iowa, is a charming city with a A+ school system and a high rating in satisfaction by its residents. So much so that Urbandale ranked #2 in livability in Iowa, and #8 for a city in the U.S. Originally, the city developed as a “streetcar suburb” of Des Moines. By the end of the 1940’s, the coal mines that needed workers closed, ending the streetcar service.

If you’re looking for a city with tons of green space, Urbandale has an astounding 850 acres of parks and 33 miles of trails. For those into outdoor activities, these trails connect to other trails in the Des Moines area, giving residents and visitors a chance to explore the larger area. The city is serviced by a number of school districts, including: Dallas Center–Grimes Community School District; Johnston School District; Waukee School District; West Des Moines School District; and Urbandale Community School District. There is also a large option of private schools, including both Christian and Catholic private schools.

Things To Do In Urbandale, Iowa

If you enjoy over-the-top celebrations on the 4th of July, Urbandale is the city for you! Urbandale boasts a three-day patriotic celebration and one of the largest 4th of July celebrations in the area. From the two-mile long parade, to street vendors and exhibitors and a stunning fireworks display, whether you’ve got young kids, teenagers, or are single and looking to enjoy the city, there is something for everyone at this celebration. Don’t forget to dust off your running shoes and join the 4th of July Run that’s been held since 1966!

Living History Farms is an interactive outdoor museum that educates and entertains visitors about the history of the Midwestern rural life experience. The museum highlights 300 years of the area’s agricultural history by re-creating farm sites and small town life using authentic simulations. Guests are greeted at each simulation by historic actors that are dressed in clothing from the era and will answer questions and give information about the time period. The museum also holds special events, including Prof. Savage’s Traveling Medicine Show which includes 19th century vaudeville skits, musical performances, and the hard-selling style of Professor Savage as he tries to convince the audience of the healing powers of his Swamp Root Elixir herbal tonic.

Outdoor enthusiasts will love Urbandale’s easy access to trails, parks, and water activities. Walker-Johntson Park is located right behind the Urbandale Library, making it the perfect destination for families with kids or for new residents that want to borrow a book then take a stroll and enjoy a mild Spring day. Kids will love the playground’s many swings and slides, and teenagers will appreciate the great skateboarding area that’s perfect for learning new tricks. There is also a pond and wooden bridge that are perfect for a late evening stroll.
