Things To Do In Ankeny, Iowa

If you love the holidays and want to support the community, the Ankeny Art Center holds the Santa’s North Pole Village Craft Show, a yearly event that features more than 300 vendors and artists. The Craft Show has been around for nearly three decades, making it an Ankeny tradition. If you need a special holiday gift or want to spice up your Christmas decorations, the wide selection of high-quality handcrafted items is the perfect place to start. This is the Center’s biggest fundraiser of the year, so employees and volunteers go all out to ensure that craft show is spectacular!

If you love the outdoors, you will definitely want to check out the famous High Trestle Trail. Winding through five towns in four counties, this decommissioned railroad line was converted into a multi-use trail for bicyclists and hikers to enjoy. The trail’s main attraction is the High Trestle Trail Bridge, which includes six viewing platforms where you can view the local beauty of the area. At night, lights illuminate the main river channel below.

If you’re interested in history and want to learn about the area, you’ll find a host of interesting information and a variety of informative displays at the Ankeny Area Historical Society. The Society’s mission is to “…inspire in our community a sense of meaning and belonging by sharing the history and culture of the Ankeny area” and they have definitely met the mark! The Museum House was built in 1905 and was passed down after his death until it was finally donated to the Society in the 1980’s. When the Museum House became too small for the many displays and exhibits, the AAHS built the Museum Barn using community donations. Current exhibits include information and artifacts from the Des Moines Ordnance Plant, as well as a Victorian parlor with a player piano, and farming artifacts from the last century.
